The original Gol Stave Church is sited in the grounds of the Norsk Folkemuseum (Norwegian Museum of Cultural History) at Bygdøy in Oslo, while a replica of the church was built in 1995

Research indicates that parts of the building were constructed after 1216, but it also has elements that date back to 1157.  The stave church – Garðar kirkja – was originally sited 300 metres southwest of the existing Gol Church, which is located at Leikvollen, Golreppen.
